How Can You Make a Moped Go Faster?

Mopeds and their close relatives, scooters, are two-wheeled vehicles that generally run on gasoline-burning internal-combustion engines. The engines can be anywhere from 50 cc (cubic centimeters) to 250 cc in size. Those mopeds with the larger engines can reach speeds of 99 miles per hour. The smaller engine mopeds, however, may only reach 30 mph, which can affect their ability to safely drive on streets with speed limits much higher. Making sure the moped is in top shape can ensure it reaches its top speeds.

Instructions

Replace the air filter of the moped to increase speed by adding extra air to the fuel mix. A clogged filter can affect performance. Take off the snap-on cover of the air filter from the side of the moped (it will be marked as such). Slide out the air filter. Place the new air filter into the now empty slot and replace the cover.

Replace the drive belt of the moped to increase wheel speed. Locate the master drive belt (the largest belt wrapped along the largest pulley wheel). Use the ratchet set to remove the constrictor bolt of the small pulley wheel on the reverse side of the belt. Slowly slide off the pulley and belt. Pull the belt off the small pulley wheel. Carefully follow the length of the belt and pull off from the larger pulley.

Place the new drive belt (tread side facing down) onto the large pulley wheel. Wrap the loose end of the belt onto the free standing small pulley wheel. Slide the small pulley wheel back onto the engine (this may take several attempts as the new belt will be tighter than the old). Tighten the wheel back onto the engine using the ratchet set.
