Checklist for a Cessna 182

The Federal Aviation Administration requires that all certified airplanes manufactured after 1979 include Airplane Flight Manuals (AFMs), which are also referred to as Pilot Operating Handbooks (POHs). The manual is divided into multiple sections which contain specific checklists. The Cessna 182 AFM contains normal and emergency procedures, each having a set of approved checklists.
  1. Aircraft Inspection and Engine Starting Checklists

    • The "Preflight Inspection" is a physical evaluation of the aircraft. The Cessna 182 comes with either fixed gear or retractable landing gear with different inspection procedures depending on the model. The "Before Starting Engine" checklist requires that all electrical switches are off and the landing gear switch is in the down position. The "Starting Engine" checklist includes setting the fuel mixture to full rich, the propeller to a high rpm, and opening the throttle ¼ inch prior to turning the key.

    Before Takeoff Checklist

    • The "Before Takeoff Checklist" begins with securing the doors, windows and seat belts. The flight controls are checked by moving the yoke and watching the movement of the controls. The final check concerns the carburetor heat and magnetos.

    Takeoff Checklist

    • A normal takeoff requires flaps set at zero to 20 degrees, the engine at full throttle, and lifting the nose at 50 knots. The short field checklist sets the wing flaps at 20 degrees and requires maintaining a climb speed of 55 knots until all obstacles are clear.

    During Flight Checklist

    • The "Flight" checklists involve climbs, cruising speeds and descents. The "Climb Checklist" includes setting the airspeed to 90 knots with the cowl flaps open and the power set at 23 inches on the throttle. The "Cruise Checklist" includes power settings for different speeds and fuel flow, closing the cowl flaps and applying trim control for the flight surfaces. The descent checklist includes closing the cowl flaps, adjusting the fuel mixture and setting flaps below 140 knots.

    Before Landing Checklist

    • The "Before Landing Checklist" includes fastening seat belts, lowering the landing gear, reducing power, setting the propeller to full forward and lowering the flaps the first 10 degrees.

    Landing Checklist

    • There are three checklists for landing, including normal landing, short field landing and balked landing. The checklists set landing of speeds of 65 to 75 knots for a normal landing and 64 knots with full flaps for short runways. The balked landing checklist includes retracting the flaps to 20 degrees, climbing at 75 knots and opening the cowl flaps before retracting the rest of the flaps.

    Securing Airplane Checklist

    • The "Securing Airplane Checklist" includes the sequence of shutting down the engine, setting the locks and turning the fuel selector valve to the right tank.

    Emergencies

    • The emergency section of the Cessna 182 POH has checklists for engine failures, fires, landing gear malfunctions, electrical failures and icing.
