Understanding the Manhattan Prong: A Geologic Feature of the Northeast

The Manhattan Prong is one of two major metamorphic-igneous complexes in New England, the other being the Vermont Piedmont. It extends north-south for roughly 200 miles (320 km) through southeastern New York State. Geographically, it is also known as the Lower Hudson Valley and the Lower Hudson Valley Highlands. Geologically, it is referred to as the Manhattan Prong Belt or Manhattan Prong Terrane, reflecting its distinct rock formations and structural significance.
