For new construction:
- Basements must be at least 7 feet high from the floor to the ceiling.
- Basements must have at least one window that is at least 24 inches wide and 36 inches high.
- The window must be operable and must be able to be opened from the inside.
- Basements must have at least one door that is at least 3 feet wide and 6 feet 8 inches high.
- The door must be able to be opened from the inside and the outside.
- Basements must have adequate lighting and ventilation.
- Basements must be waterproofed and damp-proofed.
- Basements must have a sump pump to remove water in case of flooding.
For existing construction:
- Basements that are less than 7 feet high from the floor to the ceiling must be raised to meet the new height requirement.
- Basements that do not have a window that is at least 24 inches wide and 36 inches high must have a window installed.
- The window must be operable and must be able to be opened from the inside.
- Basements that do not have a door that is at least 3 feet wide and 6 feet 8 inches high must have a door installed.
- The door must be able to be opened from the inside and the outside.
- Basements that do not have adequate lighting and ventilation must have these features added.
- Basements that are not waterproofed and damp-proofed must be waterproofed and damp-proofed.
- Basements that do not have a sump pump must have a sump pump installed.
