Burj Khalifa: No Underground Floors, Just a Massive Foundation
The Burj Khalifa (828 m, 163 floors) has no underground floors in the conventional sense—no basement levels for parking, retail, or mechanical space below the podium.
Foundation System
- Pile foundation: 192 bore piles, 1.5 m diameter, 50 m deep (164 ft) into calcareous sandstone/conglomerate.
- Pile cap / raft: 3.7 m thick reinforced concrete mat connecting all piles.
- Total concrete: 45,000 m³ for foundation; 330,000 m³ overall.
Why No Basements?
- Water table: High (near sea level); deep excavation = massive dewatering, waterproofing cost/risk.
- Geology: Weak cap rock; deep basements require extensive shoring.
- Function: Podium levels (B1–B4? Actually, the podium has 4 levels *above* ground but often called "basement" in plans—clarification: the tower rises from a 3–4 story podium; below that is only the foundation raft and piles. No occupiable sub-grade floors.)
Mechanical/electrical rooms are in the podium and at mechanical floors within the tower (every ~30 floors). Parking is in adjacent structures (Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar). The foundation is the "underground" part—engineered for 200+ mph winds and seismic loads.
