Is Manhattan Made of Garbage? Debunking the Myth
No. Manhattan is a natural island at the mouth of the Hudson River, formed by bedrock (Manhattan schist) millions of years ago. It is not constructed from trash.
The myth likely stems from two facts:
- Landfill expansion: The island's shoreline has been extended significantly since the 1600s using fill—including construction debris, excavation spoil, and yes, some historical waste—to create areas like Battery Park City, the World Trade Center site, and portions of the East River waterfront.
- Waste management: Like any major city, Manhattan generates massive waste volumes, historically shipped to landfills (notably Fresh Kills on Staten Island, now closed) and now exported to other states.
But the island's core—and the vast majority of its 22.8 square miles—is solid geologic foundation. The skyscrapers anchor into bedrock, not garbage.
