How to Save Money on Train Fares

Amtrak offers a variety of discounted fares to a number of groups. Seniors and active military personnel qualify automatically. Other groups eligible for discounts include AAA members, students, veterans, members of the American Association of Retired People (AARP), members of the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP) and students who hold an International Student Identity Card (ISIC). Amtrak also has weekly deals and specials that take up to 25% off the regular ticket price. Only once discount may be used per ticket purchased, so check all deals for pricing before booking.

Choose your destination. Once you know where you are going, you will be able to search for special sales and weekly deals for your itinerary.

    • 2

Check the regular fare for your destination on the Amtrak web site, then check the current sales by clicking on the "Deals" tab at the top of the page. If you qualify for one of the regularly discounted tickets such as senior's, student's or veteran's fares, calculate your discount based on the regular fare. If there is a sale on your destination, compare the sale price to your regular discounted price. You are not allowed to combine discounts, so choose the least expensive fare.

Purchase your ticket. Purchases may be made online, by phone, or at any rail station. If you will be using one of the regular discounts, make sure to have your membership or ID card available at the time of purchase.
