Maui is a perfect vacation spot. All it takes is one trip to the islands and you never want to leave. The only problem with Maui is it’s so darn expensive! Once you’ve been to Maui a few times, however, you learn that there are ways to save money on the not-so-important things so that you can spend more money on the stuff you really want to do. After all, you don’t want to run out of money in paradise!
Stay outside of the resort areas. Places to stay in Wailea, Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kihei can be way more expensive than places that are 10 to 20 minutes away. Neighboring cities are often just as pleasant--for instance, Honokowai is right near Kaanapali and has tons of condos and hotels to stay in. You’ll save money while still being in a nice area (and most of the condos are oceanfront!).
Stay in a condo, instead of a hotel. You’ll be tempted to get a cheap hotel room if you’re trying to save money, but eating out all the time is going to drain that money you saved very quickly. With no microwave or fridge, your food options are limited in a hotel. Being able to eat oatmeal for breakfast or a sandwich for lunch can save you at least $50 per person for a week in Maui. Simply put, spend a little more to stay in a condo and you’ll make up the cost for what you save on food!
Shop in grocery stores where the locals live. Just like the hotels and condos, grocery stores hike up their prices in resort areas. Travel to a close by city that’s more local-oriented and less touristy and you’ll save money on food (in case you haven't noticed, food is the most expensive part of Maui!). .
Eat at the local ma and pa shops, not just the known restaurants. There are many great restaurants in Maui, especially in Lahaina: Cheeseburger in Paradise, Kimo’s and Longhi’s. Usually when you vacation in Maui, these are the places you want to eat at.. Maui Tacos is one you’ve got to try--cheap Mexican food with burritos the size of your head, and the flavor is amazing. Don’t be afraid to check out the cheaper local spots (there’s also a great BBQ and rotisserie place in Napili, West Maui, just off the main highway).
Shop around for activity packages beforehand or look for kiosks selling them. Your hotel or condo will be more than happy to set up activities for you, but you can probably find them cheaper elsewhere. Boss Frog’s is a great company to go through--they usually have specials on their website, and they have lots of snorkel gear too. When you’re in Lahaina, look for the kiosks on the main strip selling packages. You can find some great deals on trips to Molokai, parasailing and other boat trips.
