If you’re suffering from money woes, planning a vacation may be the last thing on your mind. Sometimes a little break is necessary to make sure you keep your sanity and to help you regain energy to come back to your savings plan later on. Going on vacation doesn’t have to cost a fortune either. There are many ways to save money and still have a wonderful time.
Create a budget. Decide how much actual money you have to spend and what things are the most important to you in a vacation. Maybe you don’t mind sleeping in a modest place as long as you can visit lots of attractions. Or you may be more concerned about having a great hotel with a swimming pool and prefer to save money on food and souvenirs. Making these decisions in advance will help you sort out the expenses more efficiently.
Buy plane tickets as early as possible. If you shop online, you should be able to get cheaper flights by booking them at least 45 days before your trip. If time is not a concern, consider renting a car. This is an especially good idea if you’re traveling in a large group as you would be able to share gas and tolls. Long-distance buses such as Greyhound routinely offer deals for as little as $15, but they are not the most comfortable choice for trips over 8 hours or if you’re traveling with a toddler.
Consider alternatives to hotels. Hostels are now open to all ages and many offer individual rooms, some with private bathrooms. Renting an apartment is another great option and one that will save you lots of money on food, since you can shop at local supermarkets and have dinner in.
Book a hotel room that includes breakfast. Even hostels usually have this option. Aside from breakfast, most hotels also offer free tea and coffee in your room. If you stop by during the day, take a break and have coffee there rather than paying for an expensive cup at a café.
Search the Internet before you go on vacation to look for discounts and special coupons to attractions in your destination city. If you belong to a special organization or group, or if you have a student or senior card, you may also get special discounts on tickets.
