Let's face it-traveling can be expensive, and Europe is definitely one of the most costly continents to explore. Here are some easy ways to get the most for your money while traveling through cities and countryside alike.
Go with a Bed and breakfast or a hostel instead of a hotel and you'll save big money. Also, keep in mind that so-called "youth" hostels do not actually have youth restrictions-and are affordable and often quite nice too.
Look into your currency/credit card strategy ahead of time rather than waiting to make those decisions on the fly. You'll avoid stress and get the best possible exchange rates.
In some European bars and taverns it can be cheaper to drink at the bar than at a table-where there's an extra service charge. Play it safe and ask, especially in southern Europe.
Try to go in the off-season if possible. You'll avoid the crowds, get your first choice of accommodations and save plenty. November through March is a particularly good time-and even offers some mild weather in places like Greece and southern Spain.
Shop smart by holding off on buying in more chichi countries like France and England and go bargain hunting in spots like Spain and Turkey. If you don't have that option and are only in one city, hit the street markets instead of the department stores and don't be afraid to haggle.
Try to walk whenever possible and skip expensive (and occasionally unscrupulous) cab experiences. You'll see more of a city, get a workout and save lots of dough. When you do need to take a cab, try to settle on a price upfront-or at least get an estimate.
If you're not in a huge rush, opt for bus rides over train trips, which are generally far more costly.
Travel with a group or at least a companion, and you'll save plenty on everything from lodging to transportation to dining.
