British Rail Railway Sleeper Types

Sleeper trains are trains that run overnight and typically arrive at their destinations in the early morning. These trains have special sleeping accommodations for passengers to ensure a more restful journey. These beds can be simple, bench like bunks attached to the wall that are shared by strangers or luxurious private rooms with room service and plumbing. British Rail runs two types of sleeper trains. In addition, lounge cars are also available for additional relaxation.
  1. ScotRail Caledonian Sleeper

    • The ScotRail Caledonian Sleeper trains operate daily between London and Scotland. Passengers can choose between single and double occupancy rooms. Those traveling alone can split a double occupancy room with a stranger of the same sex. Double occupancy cabins have bunk beds. Every sleeper berth has air conditioning, carpeting, electric sockets, drinking water, towels, hot water in the wash basin and a bed. Room service is available the entire night. Standard class passengers receive a complimentary snack while first class passengers receive breakfast inclusive with their ticket purchase. Passengers are also able to pay a supplementary fare to make use of a sleeper berth if they are holding ordinary tickets.

First Great Western Night Riviera Sleeper

    • The First Great Western Night Riviera Sleeper operates daily between London and the West Country, all the way to Cornwall. Passengers can choose between single and double occupancy rooms, and those traveling alone can share a room with another passenger of the same sex. Double occupancy rooms have bunk beds. Sleeper berths have air conditioning, carpeting, electric sockets, drinking water, towels, and a basin with hot water as well as a bed. Room service is available all night, and all passengers receive welcome packets with toiletries. Those who book their travel online can book bargain berths on the Night Riviera.

    Lounge Cars

    • Passengers who travel by sleeper on the British Rail do not have to spend the entire trip in their sleeping berths. Both services have lounge cars where passengers can sit and visit with others before turning in for the night. ScotRail's Caledonian Sleepers have lounge cars that serve a wide selection of food and drinks and include fully stocked bars. At busy times, however, the lounge cars on these trains may be restricted to first class passengers only. The First Great Western Night Riviera Sleepers' lounge cars offer drinks, snacks and meals. In the morning, both hot and cold breakfasts are served in the lounge cars.
