Situated in the heart of the state, the North Carolina Transportation Museum features train rides across parts of the museum's sprawling 57 acres. The excursion runs for approximately 25 minutes and includes a narrated tour of the museum's facilities. The train operates year-round, including daily rides from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Larger groups (featuring 15 or more people) may charter excursions on off-days. The museum features seasonal trains as well, including spring, autumn and Christmas-themed rides.

The North Carolina Railway Museum, located just 20 miles outside of Raleigh, plays host to the New Hope Valley Railway. The line operates a nine-mile, round-trip excursion through the pine forest of New Hope Valley. The open-air train ride lasts approximately 55 minutes and typically features live music on board. The museum offers rides at least once day a month from May through December, as well as special Halloween or Christmas-themed excursions.

Tweetsie Railroad is an Old West theme park located in Blowing Rock, in the northeastern portion of North Carolina. The park offers rides, restaurants, shops and live entertainment. The park's focal point is its two historic steam locomotives, dating back to 1912 and 1943, respectively. The trains travel around the park via three miles of track. Tweetsie Railroad features such special events throughout the year as the Thomas the Train Storybook Ride, the Halloween Festival Ghost Train and the Railfan Weekend for train enthusiasts.
