Each carry-on item must weigh less than 50 pounds and be able to fit within a space measuring 28-by-22-by-14 inches. If your carry-on bags exceed these dimensions, Amtrak may require you to check them. However, several items can be brought as carry-on luggage in addition to your two bags with no additional charge. These include medication, pillows, blankets, coolers, purses and small electronic devices.
Amtrak allows you to check two bags free of charge for all passengers whose tickets allow this. You are allowed to check your baggage on the Miami to Tampa route. Amtrak requires all bags be under 50 pounds and less than 75 linear inches -- meaning the height plus the length plus the depth of the bag must total less than 75 inches. You can check two more bags for an additional $20 each.
Amtrak publishes a list of items that are forbidden on its trains. These include animals, archery equipment, canisters containing propellants, corrosive or dangerous chemicals, incendiaries, and martial arts and self-defense items. Firearms and bicycles are allowed to be checked through, but cannot be brought in carry-on, while Amtrak states that valuable or fragile items, such as credit cards, jewelry and identification should be brought in carry-on luggage but not checked through.
You can bring a number of special items items in your carry-on luggage or in your checked luggage, in lieu of another piece of baggage. Each of these items have their own specific set of requirements involving acceptable dimensions, weight and packaging. Before bringing them on board, please consult Amtrak regulations.
