A soldier normally has access to a computer to check email for sent photographs. However, soldiers can bring photographs overseas. Jewelry is also permitted, so soldiers can take over a keepsake locket containing a picture of loved ones, such as children or a spouse.
Practical items allowed overseas include toiletries, such as toothbrushes, soap and toilet paper. While plenty of items are already available overseas, a solider may prefer a specific brand or flavor. Also allowed overseas are clothing items that include sweaters or sweatshirts for cooler evenings. Women should pack permitted feminine hygiene products, such as tampons, douche and sanitary napkins. Flashlights and batteries are other acceptable items that may come in handy while overseas.
During downtime, a soldier can take pictures with permissible digital or disposable cameras. A soldier who enjoys music will like using an MP3 player with several of his favorite tunes downloaded. For those soldiers who enjoy reading, books are another permissible item. E-readers are also allowed. Other items OK to take overseas include a deck of cards, hand-held video game systems and a portable DVD player.
Allowable non-perishable foods and drinks include powdered and protein drink mixes. A soldier may enjoy healthy options, such as pre-made trail mixes. A soldier can make homemade mix with sunflowers, raisins and a variety of nuts, including cashews and peanuts. Other non-perishable food items allowed overseas include dried fruits such as peaches, cranberries and bananas. A solider may also bring bagged snacks, such as pretzel sticks, popcorn and crackers. Individually wrapped hard candies are also allowed.
