Things to Avoid With Carry-on Luggage

When packing your carry-on luggage, it is imperative that you follow the airline and Transportation Security Administration guidelines. It will allow you to pass through the security checkpoints easily, thus relieving you of any additional travel stress. Always check with your individual airline to determine its specific baggage policy.
  1. Size

    • Airlines are very specific when it comes to the acceptable size of carry-on items allowed. Most airlines allow a maximum carry-on size of 45 linear inches: the total of the bag's height, length and width. The standard is 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches. The maximum weight is 40 pounds. If a bag exceeds this weight, you may be required to check it or pay additional fees. Some bags that are irregular in shape may not be accepted, even if they fit the specified dimensions. Check with your airline to determine what its carry-on specifications are.

    Liquids

    • The Transportation Security Administration has a strict 3-1-1 policy when it comes to liquids in carry-on luggage. Liquids must be in containers that are 3 oz. in size or less. All liquid containers must then be put into one clear plastic bag that zips, and only one of these bags is allowed per passenger. These should be easily accessible in your carry-on luggage as they must be removed and separately scanned at the security checkpoint.

    Prohibited Items

    • You are prohibited from carrying certain items in your carry-on luggage. Sharp items, such as knives, box cutters, ice picks and razor blades, are not allowed. Guns and firearms are prohibited, along with self-defense items such as mace, pepper spray and martial arts equipment. Some airlines may allow ammunition to be carried on. Sports equipment such as baseball bats, hockey sticks and ski poles must be in your checked luggage. Anything flammable, explosive or containing chemicals cannot be carried on, in addition to hand tools, including axes, crowbars, hammers and any other tool over 7 inches long.

    Quantity

    • Airlines generally only allow one carry-on bag and one small personal item. Your carry-on bag is usually stored in the overhead compartments on the plane and your personal item must be small enough to fit below the seat in front of you. Airlines consider personal items to be a purse, laptop bag, briefcase or tote bag that is less than 36 linear inches. If you try to carry on more items than this or they are larger than the maximum specification, you will be required to check them at the gate.
