A carry-on item may include a purse, briefcase, camera bag, diaper bag, laptop computer bag or a similar item. Airlines may also allow personal items such as a jacket, umbrella, camera, strollers, child restraint seats or assistive devices.
Most airlines permit one bag and one personal item per economy class passenger as carry-on items. More items may be permitted for other classes. Carry-on luggage on American, Continental, Delta, Hawaiian and United must not be larger than 22 inches long by 14 inches wide by 9 inches tall. Southwest, Frontier and Alaska have similar policies on the quantity of items, but permit slightly larger dimensions.
Items should be stowed in overhead bins inside the aircraft. Heavier items should be placed under the seat in front of you. If an item is deemed too large or if there is no storage space in the aircraft, you may be asked to check the luggage.
Dangerous items are prohibited from being packed in carry-on luggage. Before traveling, visit the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website for current policies.
