International Flight Luggage Rules

Flying internationally is different than traveling domestically. There are different rules and regulations regarding carry-on bags and checked luggage. There are even different regulations depending on the airline you're traveling with and the seat you purchased. Before you pack for your trip, check the rules carefully to prevent extra fees. Fees can be expensive, starting from $50 USD per luggage item.
  1. Personal Item

    • You're allowed one personal item (purse, handbags, laptop) when traveling internationally. The size restrictions of your personal item will vary depending on your airline. Some airlines will only allow small items such as a purse, toiletry bag, laptop case, garment bag or something of similar size. Although a briefcase is allow on most airlines, some airline will ask you to check it in if it's too big or heavy. Your personal belonging must be stored under your seat or in the overhead compartment. In the case of a garment bag, it may be stored in a closet.

    Carry-on Item

    • In addition to one personal item, you may take a carry-on item with you on the plane. Your carry-on must fit under the seat or in the overhead compartment of your aircraft. The weight of your carry-on cannot surpass 40 pounds, or 50 pounds for some airlines, and may not exceed the dimensions of 22 inches by 9 inches by 14 inches.

    Checked Luggage

    • Some international airlines allow you up to three checked luggage ranging from 50-70 kg. This varies depending on your seat: coach, business, first or executive (available for some airlines only).
