Southwest Airlines Checked Baggage Rules

Southwest Airlines is one of the newest airlines in the United States, only in operation since 1971. Southwest aircrafts fly to more than 60 cities in the United States, not limited to the Southwest as implied by its name. Like every other airline in the United States, Southwest puts restrictions on its passenger's checked luggage. Each Southwest passenger is limited to the number of bags he may check and the size of that luggage is restricted.
  1. Size Requirements

    • Southwest Airlines requires that all luggage meet its size requirements upon check-in. Your checked bags must not be any larger than 62 inches, as determined by adding together the height, length and width of the bag. The weight limit per bag is 50 pounds. Bags weighing 51 to 100 pounds and/or measuring 63 to 80 inches will cost you $50 to check. Bags larger than this must be shipped via Air Cargo.

    Baggage Limits

    • Southwest Airlines permits each ticketed passenger two pieces of checked luggage at no cost. Additional pieces of luggage may be checked, but only after you've paid the appropriate fees. Any bag in excess of the allotted two bags per passenger, up to 9 bags total, will cost you an additional $50 per piece. Additional luggage costs $110 per bag. Overweight and oversize items will incur extra charges as well.

    Additional Checked Luggage Information

    • Southwest Airlines recommends securing your fragile and breakable items as best you can. Lost or damaged luggage must be reported to Southwest Airlines within four hours of arriving at your destination. Southwest is only liable for up to $3,300 worth of lost or damaged luggage per ticketed customer. Attach luggage tags stating your name, address and contact information to each of your checked bags, as recommended by Southwest Airlines.
