TSA Checked Luggage Rules

The Transportation Security Administration designates rule and regulations for airline travel that travelers must abide by. Since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, the TSA's rules for luggage contents has become more stringent than ever. Many airline passengers wonder what items are okay to pack and whether or not they should be placed into carry-on or checked luggage.
  1. Non-Permissable Items

    • Common sense dictates that certain items are prohibited from being taken onto an airplane. Most travelers are already aware that guns, knives and razors are not permitted on airplanes. Less commonly known prohibited items include sports equipment and gel shoe inserts. While none of these items are permitted in carry-on luggage, all are acceptable if packed in checked luggage. The only items not allowed in either type of luggage are flammable liquids, explosives, gun powder and gas. The TSA requires all firearms in checked luggage be unloaded, enclosed in a hard case and declared to your airline when you check in.

    Checked Luggage

    • Not all checked luggage is searched by TSA officials. However, if your luggage does not pass the electronic screening process it will be manually searched. If your luggage locks are not compatible with the TSA master key they will be cut. Size requirements for checked luggage vary based on the airline with whom you are flying. Most airlines require checked luggage meet standard weight requirements and charge fees for luggage that weighs too much. The TSA recommends placing luggage tags on your checked bags that contain your name and contact information in the event your luggage is lost.

    Carry-On Luggage

    • Carry-on luggage must meet the 3-1-1 rule for all airlines. Each passenger is permitted to bring one clear plastic bag that is one quart in size, which contains your liquids in containers weighing no more than 3.4 ounces. You must put this bag in the security bin for TSA officials to examine. Baby formula, baby food and medications must be declared at security and do not count towards your 3-1-1 allotment. All airlines allow each passenger to bring one carry-on item on board your flight in addition to your personal belongings. Handbags, laptop bags, diaper bags, strollers, car seats and wheelchairs do not count as your carry-on items. Check with your airline for the size restrictions of your carry-on bags.
