Southwest Airlines has been in business for almost 40 years. The company set guidelines in hopes that customer service and safety are made top priorities by all employees. This includes rules created for checked luggage, which apply as soon as customers walk into the airport.
All checked luggage are screened. Customers might need to present a form of identification. A name label or luggage tag should be on the outside of the luggage, but it is recommended that one be put inside the luggage as well.
Southwest Airlines allows two checked items per person for free. A person's third through ninth piece of luggage costs $50, and any bag beyond that costs $110. Both fees are for each item.
Each bag should be 50 lbs. or less. Any item between 51 and 100 lbs. costs $50 extra.
Southwest Airlines' liability for misplaced, delayed or damaged baggage is for as much as $3,300 per customer. This applies only to customers who paid for a ticket.
If baggage is fragile or not packed properly, Southwest Airlines will accept it but will mark it with a label reading "Conditional Acceptance." Southwest is not responsible for further damage to these packages.
