Luggage Limitations

Different modes of transport, whether plane, train, or cruise ship, require different limits on the amount of luggage you can bring. Knowing the limitation imposed on luggage can greatly aid you in packing for your trip. You can cut down on the extras and decide what's really important for your comfort on your trip. Packing with the luggage limitations in mind will also help you avoid unwanted check-in hassles.
  1. Trains

    • Trains such as Amtrak impose both a carry-on and checked baggage limitation. In general, passengers may have up to two carry-on luggage items, weighing no more than 50 lbs. each. Carry-on baggage must not exceed 28-by-22-by-14 inches. Travelers may also have up to three checked baggage items, each weighing no more than 50 lbs. Checked baggage must have dimensions of 36-by-36-by-36 inches or less. Exceptions may apply, so passengers should check their specific train for exact information. Handling charges may also apply.

    Airlines

    • Delta Airlines, known to be typical of the industry, has imposed tight restrictions on luggage limits. Passengers may carry one personal item and one carry-on item for most flights. Carry-ons must measure 22-by-14-by-9 inches. Carry-ons don't have a weight restriction and don't include wheelchairs, baby strollers, or umbrellas, as well as some other items. Personal items may include a laptop or purse. Checked bags should weigh 50 lbs. or less and measure 62 inches total or less. Fees don't apply for the first checked bag for most travel outside the U.S.

    Cruise Ships

    • Cruise ships have a liberal luggage allowance. Most cruise lines allow up to 200 lbs. of luggage per passenger. Some cruise lines, such as Carnival, Princess, and Disney, do not impose any luggage limit.

    Bus

    • Bus companies, such as Greyhound, impose clear luggage restrictions on passengers. For the Greyhound company, passengers may bring a 25-lb. or less carry-on, but it must fit beneath the seat or overhead. Travelers may bring one checked bag without charge. Checked bags must weigh 50 lbs. or less and measure 62 total inches or less. If the luggage exceeds these limits, special fees will be charged.
