Luggage Rules for Flying Abroad

The Transport Security Agency is the government agency that has the mandate to protect the nation's transportation systems; a task which it takes very seriously. To this end, TSA has laid out various rules and regulations which travelers must obey. The majority of these rules and regulations are centered on luggage. It doesn't matter if the travelers are going on a trip locally or traveling abroad, the same rules apply when traveling by air, and it is up to the passengers to familiarize themselves with rules set by TSA and the travelers' airline.
  1. Travelers with Disabilities

    • Passengers may carry medication such as eyedrops.

TSA realizes that travelers with medical conditions have special equipment and medication that they must take with them when they are traveling by air. Even though TSA does not allow any liquid in excess of 3.4 ounces, or 100 milliliters, onto an aircraft, it will make an exception for necessary medication, which has to be declared upon check-in. The patient, companion or caregiver also has to sign a declaration, or make an oral declaration, concerning such medication. Such medication has to be separated from all the other items the passenger submits for screening during check-in. TSA also allows some cosmetic augmentation products such as saline solution in breast implants, gel bra inserts and prosthetic breasts. Other things thar the passengers may carry with them include liquids such as water and juice, eye drops and liquid nutrition.

    Luggage Size

    • Airlines determine the size of luggage a passenger may carry.

TSA does not have any specific rules regarding the size of the luggage passengers may bring with them onto an aircraft, so long as such luggage can pass through the x-ray machine. It is the airlines that determine the weight of the luggage passengers are allowed to carry onto aircraft, and it is up to the passenger to call ahead to the airline or the travel agent to find out what these requirements are.

    Prohibited Items

    • TSA will not allow sporting equipment such as golf clubs onto an aircraft.

TSA has a long list of items that it does not allow in checked baggage. These are usually items that could be used as a weapon. Such prohibited items include sporting equipment such as bows and arrows, golf clubs, lacrosse sticks and ski poles. TSA also will not allow sharp objects such as ice picks, meat cleavers, scissors with blades that exceed 4 inches and knives. TSA will allow sharp objects such as safety razor blades, disposable razors and round-bladed butter knives. All other sharp items have to be put into checked baggage and secured inside sheaths in order to remove the risk of injury to inspectors and baggage handlers.
