Air Travel Security Rules for Check-In Luggage

More than 700 million air trips are taken each year. To ensure the safety of passengers and crew, the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) and airlines set regulation on what you cannot carry in your checked baggage.
  1. Types

    • The TSA prohibits travelers from packing gun powder, explosives, flammable items, more than 5 liters of alcoholic beverages not more than 70 percent alcohol or dangerous chemicals like chlorine and bleach in checked baggage.

    Considerations

    • Some airlines have even stricter regulations than the TSA. The most commonly excluded items are firearms and ammunition.

    Alternatives

    • Some items that are prohibited in checked baggage are allowed in carry-on baggage; these include lithium batteries and common lighters with fuel.

    Features

    • Sometimes airport security needs to open a bag to inspect its contents. The TSA has worked with two companies to create locks that can be opened by a master key for security personnel so that your lock will not be broken off.

    History

    • The Transportation Safety Administration was created in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and is responsible for road, rail and boat safety in addition to aircraft.
