What Items Are Prohibited for Air Travel?

Before you head to the airport, you should know which items the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) prohibits from air travel. The last thing you want is to be delayed at a security checkpoint or be forced to throw away your favorite hand lotion because you didn't know the rules.
  1. Liquids

    • You must pack most liquids in your checked luggage. If you want to carry small containers of liquids in your carry-on baggage, each one can't be more than 3.4 oz. You must place the containers in a clear, zip-top, plastic bag that is no larger than one quart.

    Sharp Objects

    • You must put all sharp objects, excluding safety scissors, in your checked luggage. You can't carry box cutters, ice axes, knives, razor blades, swords or other sharp objects in your carry-on baggage.

    Sporting Equipment

    • You can't carry ski poles, lacrosse sticks, golf clubs or similar sporting equipment onto the airplane, but you can take them on your trip as checked luggage.

    Firearms

    • You can pack most unloaded firearms in checked luggage but not in carry-on baggage. You must pack them in a locked, hard-sided container and declare them at check-in. You can't carry flares or gunpowder in carry-on baggage or checked luggage.

    Other Items

    • You can carry regular cigarette lighters without fuel in your carry-on baggage, but you can't carry strike-anywhere matches in the cabin or checked luggage. You must place gel-type candles, gel shoe inserts and decorative items such as snow globes in your checked luggage.
