Air Travel Rules for Passengers

The Transportation Security Administration enforces air travel rules for passengers to ensure their safety during flights and have set up security checkpoints inside airports. Trained transportation security officers check all passengers traveling on airplanes to make sure they are not carrying anything on their person or in their luggage that is dangerous or could cause harm.
  1. Gels and Liquids

    • If you plan to take personal care items such as lotion, shampoo or shower gels in your carry-on luggage, air travel rules limit the amounts you are allowed to pack. Containers must hold no more than 3 oz. and they must be marked. For example, travel size personal care items purchased in stores are labeled for content and size. Transferring gels and liquids into unmarked smaller plastic bottles is not acceptable because the security checkpoint officers will not be able to read the content measurements. Place your 3 oz. bottles in a sealable clear plastic bag before packing them inside your carry-on luggage. Airplane passengers with items not in compliance with the regulations will have to place them into check-on luggage, mail them or discard them at the checkpoint.

    Prohibited Items

    • In order to ensure the safety of airplane passengers, TSA prohibits certain carry-on items as well as checked-in luggage. For example, explosives and flammable items cannot be taken on airplane travel such as flares, fireworks, lighter fluid, bleach and gasoline. Aerosol cans are only allowed if they are personal care items meeting 3 oz. regulation size. Items that can be carried in checked luggage and not carry-on luggage include sporting equipment such as bats and golf clubs as well as ammunition and unloaded firearms properly packed. Tools such as hammers and saws can be carried in check-on luggage and tools smaller than 7 inches such as pliers, screwdrivers and wrenches are also allowed in carry-on bags.

    Pets

    • Some airlines allow airplane passengers to bring their pets inside the cabin or checked in as luggage. Air travel rules for pets include that they must be contained in size-appropriate carriers, especially if they are allowed inside the cabin. Pet carriers must meet any specific air travel rules of the particular airline and must fit inside the cabin and not cause disruption to fellow passengers. Pet owners must provide documentation from a veterinarian proving their pet had a pre-flight examination and any necessary vaccinations. Pets traveling on airplanes must also go through the security checkpoint and their carriers are subject to a security examination and may have to through the X-ray machine without your pet inside.
