Two other pieces of government identification can be without photo. One of these pieces should indicate name, date of birth and gender. Children should carry their student identification card and birth certificate.
A child must have his own passport to enter another country. Children traveling within Canada or internationally need to have a birth certificate indicating names of both parents, citizenship card and legal documents regarding custody. If the child travels with one parent or no parents, a parental consent letter(s) may be required. If one parent is deceased, a death certificate may be required.
A child traveler without accompanying parents is an unaccompanied minor. Parents need to contact the airline about services for their children. For example, Air Canada has an unaccompanied minor service mandatory for children eight to eleven years of age. This service for nonstop flights is not available to children under eight years of age.
