Minor Air Travel Requirements

The Federal Aviation Administration has no spelled out rules for unaccompanied minors on airplanes and therefore each airline writes its own policy. The definition of an unaccompanied minor differs with each carrier but most airlines designate the ages of five to 11 as unaccompanied minors (UMs). Adults need to remember that the definition along with the rules change from airline to airline so they need to speak to the airline well in advance of the date of travel and prior to purchasing a ticket.
  1. Direct Flights

    • Most carriers agree that UMs can reserve direct flights with no connections as long as they are over five years old and under 12 and get the UM service. A direct flight could make stops but the child does not have to change planes. The guardians of the minor child must provide the carrier with proper identification of the person picking up the child. Most carriers require that you escort the child on to the plane and stay at the gate until the plane has taken off. One helpful hint is to provide the UM with all travel information, two points of contact at the destination and two points of contact for home and of course a means of communication like a phone card or cell phone.

    Connecting Flights

    • Connecting flights make some carriers change the rules. Not all carriers allow UMs to make connecting flights. Like Southwest Airlines states that they will not deal with any connecting flights and will only book UMs on non-stop flights or direct flights with no connections. While some carriers like Delta Airlines state UMs five to 14 years of age can make connecting flights and they will assist them through all steps of the process. Most carriers do agree that they will not book UMs on the last connecting flight of the day because of the fear that kids might have to spend time in a hotel alone.

    Other Restrictions

    • All airlines charge fees for the UM designation. The fee can be as low as $50 or as high as $100. So the family paying these fees needs to pay close attention to all restrictions. The airline may have a higher minimum age for children making connecting flights. The carrier may not allow the minors to travel if a second carrier is involved. The airline may require early check in times like 60 to 90 minutes prior to departure. Lastly the airline just might charge adult fares for the children to use their UM service. The bottom line is book with a carrier that will meet your travel needs and do your homework.
