What Items Are Restricted in Hand Luggage for Air Travel?

When traveling by air, carry only items allowed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in your hand luggage. Otherwise, you could possibly face an unwanted encounter with security. Your hand luggage is considered carry-on baggage, which differs from checked baggage. The list of restricted items for hand luggage is different from checked baggage.
  1. Sports Equipment

    • If you are planning a vacation that includes outdoor sports or recreational activities, consider renting equipment when you arrive at your destination. Restricted items include baseball bats, golf clubs, ski poles and hockey sticks. For hunters, no type of firearm is allowed. Parts of guns, gun powder and gun lighters are prohibited, as well as flares and pellet guns. Leave any martial arts weapons and self-defense tools, including throwing stars, night sticks, self-defense sprays and brass knuckles, out of your hand luggage.

    Sharp Items

    • Most sharp items are restricted. Ice axes and picks, knives that are not plastic, and round-bladed butter knives are restricted, as are swords and sabers. Do not bring any type of razor blade. This includes box cutters, safety razor blades and utility knives. Scissors that have blades longer than 4 inches are also restricted.

    Odd Items

    • There are a few items that might seem harmless, but are still prohibited. Leave your printer ink cartridges and toner at home. Candles made from gel and gel inserts for shoes, are also prohibited, as is anything flammable, including aerosol paint, liquid or gels. Snow globes or decorations that have liquid features are also prohibited.
