What ID Is Needed for Children on Air Travel?

The rules and regulations implemented by the Transportation Security Administration vary from adults to minors. Knowing exactly what those rules are could keep you from running into unnecessary delays at the airport.
  1. Domestic Flights

    • Children under age 18 traveling with adults are not required to show photo identification, although some airlines require proof of age in the form of a birth certificate. Contact your airline before travel to see if this is required. They do need a boarding pass.

    International Flights

    • Children fall under the same rules as adults for international travel. A valid passport is required.

    Unaccompanied Minors

    • If a minor under age 18 is flying without an adult, the adults dropping off and picking up the child at the airport are required to show photo identification.
