The Documents Required for Air Travel Within the U.S.

Each air travel passenger within the United States must provide a valid form of identification and travel information for security purposes. Without this documentation, you will be denied access to your flight.

  1. Identification Requirements

    • As of June 21, 2008, all travelers must present security officials with tamper-proof, government-issued photo identification that lists name, gender, date of birth and an expiration date.

    Identification Types

    • Suitable forms of identification include a U.S. or foreign passport, U.S. passport card, U.S. military ID, Native American tribal photo ID, U.S. driver's license, U.S. state photo ID, or Transportation Worker Identification Credential.

    Considerations

    • Adults with identification that does not meet the official requirements will be asked to provide personal information to the Transportation Security Administration officer in charge of travel document checking. If they are able to verify their identity, travelers may be allowed to fly at the discretion of the TSA official.

    Boarding Passes

    • Passengers are required to present a boarding pass, received upon completion of the check-in process, at the security checkpoint and boarding gate.

    Minors

    • Individuals under the age of 18 are not required to show identification in order to fly.
