Copa Airlines, founded in 1947 and based out of Panama, currently flies to 45 destinations in 24 countries with its fleet of Boeing 737 and Embraer 190 aircraft. All of the flights depart and terminate in Panama, making the airline a true international carrier. However, because of its international operation the airline has strict baggage policies in place.
Copa Airlines permits all passengers to carry baggage into the cabin and check items into the aircraft's cargo hold. Those passengers seated in Business Class are permitted to carry two pieces of baggage into the cabin and may check three items. Main cabin passengers may bring one bag into the cabin and may check two items into the cargo hold. It is a good idea to remember that the government overseeing your departure city may have regulations in place regarding what can be packed in a carry-on item.
Each piece of carry-on luggage cannot exceed 46 linear inches and 22 lbs. Checked bags are currently free on Copa Airlines. Each bag must not exceed 62 linear inches. However, certain limitations apply to the weight of each bag depending on your destination and departure point.
On all routes except to the United States, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Mexico the total weight of your checked bags must not exceed 70 lbs. If you are traveling to San Juan or Mexico, your bags can have an individual weight of 50 lbs. If you're traveling between the United States and Brazil, each bag may have an individual weight of 70 lbs.
Any checked bag exceeding the weight limit is subject to a minimum $50 fee depending on your destination. Excess weight fees can be as much as $100 if traveling between the United States and Brazil. Checked bags that are larger than 62 linear inches are subject to an oversize bag fee of $75. Any bag larger than 107 linear inches will not be accepted for transport.
Copa Airlines will not accept any bag which has a declared value of more than $5000, strictly for liability purposes. Also, the transport of corrosive liquids or sharp objects is prohibited. Finally, you may transport perishable items, such as flowers, meat and fish, however they must be packaged in containers with 4.4 oz. or less of dry ice to maintain freshness. Copa Airlines is not responsible for those items that perish because of delays and/or cancellations.
Copa Airlines permits you to travel with your pet as either a carry-on item or a checked item. Reservations for your pet must be made at least 48 hours prior to departure time and a maximum of three pet kennels is permitted per flight. If you decide to check your pet with your baggage, you will be charged a fee based upon the excess baggage rates. Cages that weigh less than 70 lbs. will be charged $125 and more than 70 lbs. will be charged $200. Pets that are less than eight-weeks-old or that exceed a combined weight with their cage of over 100 lbs. will be not permitted for transport. If you decide to travel with your pet in the cabin, a fee of $75 applies and the dimensions of the pet carrier must not exceed 14 x 22 x 9 inches.
