Hawaiian Airlines Baggage Regulations

While Hawaiian Airlines yields to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rules regarding the types of items you can bring aboard an aircraft or store in checked baggage, it has its own unique regulations for both carry-on and checked bags. Hawaiian limits carry-on bags and charges fees for checked bags as well as items that exceed its size and weight parameters.
  1. Carry-On Regulations

    • Hawaiian Airlines regulates both the size and number of carry-on items you can bring aboard flights. Carry-ons must fit underneath the seat in front of you or in an overhead bin. They cannot exceed 45 linear inches (length + width + height) or 25 pounds. Hawaiian Airlines allows passengers one piece of carry-on baggage, as well as an additional personal item. Additional personal items, according to the Hawaiian Airlines website, include a "normal size handbag," laptop, diaper bag or one bag or box of duty-free items. As long as you keep them on your person. Hawaiian Airlines also allows you to bring other items on flights, such as an overcoat, umbrella, walking stick, camera, a "reasonable amount" of reading material, infant food for the flight or a collapsible wheelchair.

    Checked Baggage Fees Per Bag

    • On flights between the Continental U.S. and Hawaii, Hawaiian Airlines levies a $23 charge for your first checked bag when using the airline's online check-in system. If you check the first bag at the airport, you are subject to a $25 fee. If you check your second bag online, you will pay $32. If you check bag number two at the airport, Hawaiian Airlines charges $35. Either method prompts a $125 fee for bags three through six, while a $200 charge applies to the seventh and each additional bag. All Gold, Platinum and Premier passengers can check two bags for free. Platinum and Gold fliers start paying with bag number four, while Premier members get hit with a fee beginning with their third checked bag.

For flights between Hawaiian islands, Hawaiian Airlines charges $10 for your firstchecked bag, $17 for your second and $25 for your third and each additional bag. For Platinum and Gold members of Hawaiian's frequent flyer club, the first three checked bags are free. Normal fees apply starting with bag number four. Premier members can check two bags for free before incurring a charge. Hawaiian's website does not indicate a fee difference for checking bags online or at the airport for inter-island travel.

International flights trigger different rules, which vary based on destination. Hawaiian permits two free checked bags for all international travellers, but fees and limits differ depending upon where you are heading. Check with Hawaiian Airlines for specific details pertaining to your itinerary.

    Oversize and Overweight Baggage Fees

    • Hawaiian Airlines charges additional fees for checked bags between 51 and 70 pounds. Bags that are less than 51 pounds and exceed 62 linear inches are subject to an additional fee. Hawaiian notes that overweight and oversized bags result in both overweight and oversize fees. These fees also vary by destination. Each overweight or oversized bag brings about a $25 fee for inter-island journeys. On flights between Hawaii and the Continental U.S., Hawaiian Airlines charges customers $50 for each excess weight checked bag and $100 for each oversized checked bag.
