Passengers are allowed one carry-on bag and one additional item, such as a laptop or purse. Carry-on bags must not exceed 45 inches in combined height, length and width. They must be small enough to fit in an overhead bin or under the seat. Strollers, umbrellas and coats are not considered carry-on items.
Economy travelers who purchased tickets after Jan. 14, 2010, for flights within the United States will pay $25 for the first checked bag and $35 for the second bag. Additional fees may apply if more than two bags are checked or if any bag exceeds 50 pounds or 62 inches in combined height, weight and length. Some passengers, such as those flying first and business class, are exempt from baggage fees.
Many items that are prohibited as a carry-on may be included in checked luggage. For example, sharp tools such as knives, cleavers and box cutters and sports equipment like sabers and fencing swords may not be carried on board but can be checked. Firearms, bows and arrows, baseball and cricket bats, golf clubs and hockey sticks must checked as well. The Transportation Security Administration prohibits all flammable and explosive materials such as fireworks, aerosol cans, flares and gunpowder.
