United States Airline Regulations & Restrictions

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was created to protect airline travelers in a post-9/11 world. The agency is responsible for security at the nation's airports and regulates what passengers can take on-board and the documents required to pass airport security.
  1. ID Requirements

    • In 2008, the TSA established regulations requiring commercial airline passengers to carry government-issued identification. Passengers must show their ID to airport personnel to pass through security checkpoints and board their flight. Commonly used IDs include driver's licenses, passports, military IDs and permanent resident cards. The TSA website provides a complete list of acceptable IDs.

    Liquid Restrictions

    • TSA regulations (as of 2010) allow passengers to bring small quantities of liquids and gels aboard a plane as part of their carry-on baggage in three ounce or smaller containers. Passengers must put these containers in a single, clear plastic zip-top bag and allow this bag to pass through X-ray machines to pass airport security.

    Prohibited Carry-on Items

    • Items that could be used as weapons are generally not allowed in carry-on luggage. As of 2010, prohibited items included guns, rifles and sharp objects such as ice picks, box cutters, knives and swords. Sporting good including bats, sporting sticks, golf clubs, pool cues, ski poles and bows and arrows were also prohibited, however, these items could be placed in checked baggage.
