Airtran Airline Liquid Carry on Regulations

In response to terrorist attempts to detonate liquid-based, carry-on explosives---specifically the August 10, 2006, attempt that took place in the United Kingdom---the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has set up several regulations when it comes to carrying toiletry products and other liquids on to planes. These regulations are standard for all U.S.-based airline providers, including AirTran Airline, a low-fair airline based out of Atlanta.

  1. The Plastic Bag Rule

    • According to AirTran, when you carry on toiletry items and other approved liquids, you must transport them in a quart-sized, see-through plastic bag that has a sealable top (such as a Ziploc bag). This makes it easier for TSA security officers to examine the items as they roll down the conveyer belt and through the X-ray machines. Make sure to keep your plastic bag in an easy-to-reach location as you move through the security checkpoint line. Also, make sure you put your plastic bag in the plastic bin that is provided before you slide it on to the belt.

    Container Sizes

    • With the exception of a few items, you can only bring travel-sized liquid, gel and aerosol-based items through security checkpoints and on to planes. According to AirTran, all of these items must be 3 ounces or less; otherwise you will not be allowed to bring them on to the plane. Again, make sure you have your travel-sized containers in a plastic bag as you go through security.

    Declaring Items

    • There are a limited number of liquids that you can bring through security checkpoints and onto AirTran flights in quantities greater than 3 ounces. These include baby formula, milk, breast milk and other baby-related food items; essential medications; and any other liquids that you may need to drink due to a documented medical condition. However, according to AirTran, you will need to declare these items---and relevant documentation---to a TSA officer before you begin the screening process.

    Banned Items

    • AirTran notes that there are several liquids that are flat-out banned from being carried on to AirTran flights. These include non-toiletry or non-consumption-based aerosols (such as spray paint and air fresheners); paints in general; paint thinners; turpentine; varnishes; ammonia; chlorine; bleach; disinfectant; hydrogen peroxide solutions that contain more than 7 percent peroxide per unit volume; oven cleaner; carburetor cleaner; and all fuels, fuel additives and flammable liquids, including propane, butane, octane and gasoline.

    After Clearing Security

    • Once you have gone through security screening and are in a secure, pre-boarding waiting area, you can purchase approved liquids and bring them on to planes.
