Airline travel after the Al Quaida terrorist attack of 2001 became much more restrictive in regards to security regulations. Currently, some personal toiletries and medication can be brought onto a plane, as long as the passengers follow specific security regulations.
The Transportation Security Administration has created a policy that is known as the 3-1-1 standard for bringing liquids for personal use on an airplane. This rule states that the largest container for these liquids is 3 ounces. A passenger can bring as many of these 3-ounce containers with approved liquids on an airplane that can fit in one, clear 1-quart bag.
If you do not have your liquids stored properly, the staff at the security screening point will require you to discard your liquids or to remove yourself from line and repackage the items. They will not provide supplies, so be prepared when you arrive at the airport.
Certain liquids are not subject to the 3-1-1 rule. These liquids include breast milk, baby formula, medication and food. As an airline passenger, you are expected to only bring reasonable amounts of these items in your carry-on luggage. If the security staff determines the volume you have is too large, they will require that you include it in your checked luggage for the flight. Liquids should be clearly marked, and you should inform personnel that you have them.
The 3-1-1 Policy was put in place for flights that cover short distances. The enforcement of this policy is subject to the discretion of the security personnel at the checkpoint. The TSA requires that passengers follow the decisions of the security personnel.
Any liquid that is purchased before passing through the security checkpoint is subject to the guidelines of the 3-1-1 Policy. If you purchase a liquid product from one of the stores after passing through the security checkpoint, those items are permitted on the plane and do not need to be placed in the 1-quart bag. Examples may include liquids, gels, aerosols and sodas.
