Passengers aboard American Airlines are allowed to carry one bag and one personal item on to the flight. Bags are stored in the overhead compartments. Personal items usually consist of purses, backpacks and/or computer bags that can be stowed easily under the seat.
Dimensions for bags to be stored overhead must not exceed a sum of 45 inches in length, width and height. For each measurement, the bag cannot be more than 22" long, 14" wide and 9" tall. Collapsible items are usually allowed if they fit the acceptable requirements. Many American airports have a box on display near the check-in area of the terminal so customers can ensure their carry-on luggage will fit.
Carry-on restrictions can vary by location and aircraft size. On some smaller planes, overhead compartments are considerably smaller, so it is possible a bag meeting standard requirements may not fit. Despite meeting regulations, limits may be placed on a bag after the boarding process at the discretion of the airline attendants. Additionally, any liquids packed prior to the security checkpoint must meet the TSA standard of being less than 3.4 ounces per item and be placed in a clear, one-quart, plastic bag.
