American Airlines Carry-on Restrictions

American Airlines limits passengers to one carry-on bag and one additional personal item. Personal items include coats, purses and laptop bags. The maximum dimensions for the carry-on bag are 22 inches long by 14 inches wide by 9 inches tall and cannot exceed an overall dimension of 45 inches.
  1. Liquid Restrictions

    • The airline has strict rules regarding transporting liquids in carry-on baggage. Liquids such as toiletries, cosmetic products or non-solid food items may be stored in carry-on baggage only if packaged correctly. These products must be 3.4 ounces or less and packaged in a one-quart clear plastic zip top tote.

    Carry-on versus Checked Bags

    • American Airlines has some items that are restricted for carry-on bags but can be transported in checked baggage. Cutting instruments such as box cutters, metal knives of any length and ice picks must be transported in your checked baggage only. Ammunition is only allowed in checked baggage and cannot exceed 11 pounds for sporting use.

    Items that are Completely Restricted

    • The airline has some items that it completely restricts from both carry-on and checked baggage. Pressurized containers such as CO2 canisters, propane tanks and inflatable rafts are not allowed to be transported. Household products like bleach, drain cleaner and solvents also cannot be carried on any American Airlines flight.
