American Airlines' international rules for baggage weight vary depending on the destination. Passengers to Brazil can check two bags that weigh a maximum of 70 pounds each. Passengers to India and Europe can check one 50-pound bag for free, while travelers to Asia can check two 50-pound bags without a charge. The combined height, width and length of checked bags cannot exceed 62 inches, according to American Airlines.
For some international flights, passengers must pay to check luggage. For U.S.-based flights to and from Puerto Rico, Canada or the U.S. Virgin Islands, it costs $24 for the first checked bag, $35 for the second bag and $100 for the third bag. For Europe and India, passengers must pay if they check more than one bag.
When checking baggage, the Transportation Security Administration warns travelers not to lock their luggage, because every item must be screened and may be opened and searched.
