American Airlines Guidelines for Luggage

American Airlines offers general guidelines on passenger baggage. There are certain exceptions depending on your destination and the class of service you fly.
  1. Carry-on

    • Each passenger is allowed to carry one bag plus one personal item. The bag must not exceed 22 inches in length, 14 inches in width and 9 in inches height or have overall dimensions greater than 45 inches. All carry-on baggage must be kept in an overhead storage compartment.

Personal items allowed includes purses, briefcases and laptops. These must fit under the seat.

Items allowed beyond these restrictions include books, coats, small bags of food for consumption during the flight, diaper bags for traveling children, pillows and medical devices such as wheelchairs and walkers.

    Checked Baggage

    • For tickets bought after Feb. 1, 2010, American Airlines charges $25 for the first piece of baggage, $35 for the second, $100 each for up to the 5th and $150 for each additional piece. Passengers flying first and business class are allowed to check 3 pieces of baggage at no charge.

    Carry-on Restrictions

    • Many commonly used items can be dangerous when transported by air. Changes in temperature and air pressure can cause leakage, toxic fumes or fire. Other items may be used as a weapon and are restricted.

Certain items such as gels, liquids and aerosols may be carried on if they are in a 3.4-oz. or smaller container and kept in a 1-quart, clear zip-top bag. If not, they must be in checked baggage.

If you are unsure if an item is restricted, contact an American Airlines representative.
