American Airlines is the biggest airline from the United States. With destinations throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia, it is also one of the largest commercial airlines in the world. Even though this airline goes to many places around the globe, if travelers choose to fly on this airline, they have to obey its luggage policies.
Each passenger is allowed to carry on one piece of baggage. It cannot weight more than 40 lbs. and cannot be more than 45 inches in length. When boarding the plane, the baggage has to be put in the carry-on compartment above the seat. Aside from one bag, each passenger is allowed to have a hat, a book, a small bag of food, a diaper bag, wheelchairs and booster seats for children.
Each passenger is usually allowed to checked-in one piece of baggage, depending on the destination. Some international destinations, such as Asia, allow each person two pieces of checked-in baggage. Each piece of checked-in baggage cannot weigh more than 50 lbs. and cannot be more than 62 inches in length. If the item weighs more than 50 lbs. but less than 70 lbs., there is a $50 subcharge.
Alcoholic beverages with more than 70 percent alcoholic content are not allowed on the plane. On top of that, guns bigger than 11 lbs. are not allowed on the plane. Items, such as pepper spray and tear gas, are not allowed. If travelers come to the airport with explosives, such as fireworks, fuel, flare guns, they should be prepared to dispose of those before they check in. Household items, such as bleach and insecticides, are not allowed. Spray cans are also restricted on the plane. Lastly, self-inflating life jackets are not allowed.
If travelers are bringing items on the plane such as surfboards, bicycles, hangliders, javelins, kiteboards, and scuba gear, they should be prepared to pay a $100 subcharge. These types of items cannot weigh more than 70 lbs. and cannot be more than 115 inches in length. Otherwise, all other sports items can be checked-in as regular baggage as long as they do not weigh more than 50 lbs. and are no more than 62 inches in length.
If a piece of luggage is found to be damaged, it is the passengers' responsibilities to contact American Airlines before they leave the airport and within the first 24 hours of receiving the bag. If the passengers are on a international trip, they have to contact American Airlines within seven days of the trip. Baggage which weighs more than 100 lbs. will not be accepted aboard the plane. If travelers are in the military, they are allowed to check-in three pieces of baggage for free.
