Policy for Baggage on Delta Air Lines

The charge for baggage is not included in a Delta Air Lines flight ticket. Passengers are not restricted to a certain number of bags, but each bag incurs a fee. All baggage is subject to security searches, any bag may be refused and curbside baggage check-in is available for an additional fee. Checking baggage online before arriving at the airport will save the traveler $2 to $3 per bag (as of 2010).
  1. Carry-On Baggage

    • Delta allows passengers to carry on one bag and one personal item free of charge. A carry-on bag should measure 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches, or smaller. Personal items include a purse, diaper bag, laptop bag or camera bag. Additional allowable items not counted as carry-ons or personal items are jackets, umbrellas, food and drink purchased after the security checkpoint, child strollers, car seats, wheelchairs and crutches.

    Checked Baggage

    • Checked baggage is limited to 50 pounds per bag. Each checked bag must measure less than 62 inches in combined length, width and height. Delta charges for each checked bag. Fees depend on destination. As of November 2010, Delta's airport check-in fee for travel in the United States, Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico is $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second bag. Certain items, such as laptop computers, are not allowed to be checked, and must be counted as carry-on luggage.

    Delayed, Lost, or Damaged Baggage

    • If baggage is delayed, Delta will reimburse the passenger for reasonable costs involved with the delay. Receipts are required for reimbursement. Reimbursement is limited to $50 for the first 24 hours, and $25 per day for up to four additional days. If your luggage is permanently lost or damaged in transit, appropriate forms will be required to file a claim.
