Delta Baggage Requirements

Air travel has recently become more complicated with the extra security requirements and changes in baggage allowances. In the past year, baggage charges have been instituted by many airline carriers. It is imperative to be aware of the current baggage requirements before departing on a trip. Delta Airlines has created an excellent listing of all its baggage requirements for travelers.
  1. Carry-On Baggage

    • A standard-sized approved personal item can be carried on board.

Delta Airlines allows one bag and one personal item at no charge but all items must fit into the overhead bin or under the seat. If a passenger reaches the gate with a carry-on bag that is too large, extra fees can apply to check the bag onto the flight at that time. Delta provides a Carry-on Baggage Check near the check-in counters and at the gate. Approximately carry-on limits are 22-inches by 14 inches by 9 inches.

Personal items include a purse, laptop, briefcase, diaper bag, camera bag or similar-sized items. Items that may be carried on and do not count as personal item or baggage include a jacket or umbrella, food or drink purchased before the flight, duty-free merchandise, strollers, child restraint seats, or assistive items such as a wheelchair or crutches.

    Checked Baggage

    • All large bags must be checked onto the flight.

Delta's guidelines state that checked baggage must weigh 50 pounds or less and its combined length, width and height must measure 62 inches or less. Checked baggage fees for flights in the United States and Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico: $23 for the first bag, if checked online or $25 at the airport kiosk, ticket counter or curbside; $32 for the second bag online or $35 at the airport.

For travel between the United States or Canada and Mexico, Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda and Cayman Islands, there are no fees for the first checked bag. The second checked bag is $27 if checked in online or $30 at the airport.

For travel between the United States or Canada and Europe: no fee for the first checked bag; second checked bag, $50 if checked online or $55 at the airport. Baggage prices will change based on the currency of the departed destination. Several exceptions apply to the above listed fees and Delta's website provides a complete listing.

Members of the U.S. military traveling on military orders may check up to three, 70-pound bags if traveling economy class, or four 70-pound bags if traveling in first or business classes.

All above guidelines and prices are as of October 2010.

    Additional, Overweight and Oversized Baggage

    • Delta Airlines will accept baggage for each passenger in addition to the above listed requirements; however, fees do apply for extra bags, or any piece of luggage over the weight limit or oversized.

Passengers will incur separate fees for exceeding size, weight and quantity limitations. An extra piece of baggage that exceeds the weight and size limits, for example, will be subject to three fees: one for the extra bag, one for exceeding the weight limit, and one for going over the size restriction. Fees are charged for each additional bag, each way.

Delta allows up to 10 pieces per person, when space on the flight allows. When traveling with additional baggage, it is important to notify Delta ahead of time to avoid any delays or issues accommodating special situations. For passengers traveling within the United States, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or between Canada and any of these locations, bag three is $125, and bags four through 10 are $200 per piece.

Travel between the United States and Canada to any European or Asian destination, bags three through 10 will cost $200 each. For baggage that exceeds the basic weight limit of 50 pounds, costs are from $90 to $450 for certain international travel locations.

For baggage that qualifies as over-sized, any piece more than 63 inches up to 115 inches, charges range from $150 to $300. All aforementioned fees apply to one-way travel.

    General Conditions of Baggage Acceptance

    • Be prepared and ready to travel with Delta Airlines.

Delta Airlines reminds travelers that all baggage is subject to search by airport personnel. The airline reserves the right to refuse bags that pose a safety or annoyance risk to other passengers or crew. Specific baggage check rules vary by airport, so review the airport guidelines in advance. Baggage on Delta flights can be checked at curbside, at any Delta airport kiosk or online. The surcharge is waived for online check-ins. Mark each bag with identifying information in the event that it is lost.
