Delta Airline Baggage Rules

Size and weight do matter when pertaining to luggage rules aboard any Delta Airlines flight. All Delta passengers will find that criteria related to their luggage can include added fees on something that once was included in the ticket price. These rules and charges also depend upon your destination. The class of service you fly on Delta will determine which specific details pertaining to baggage will apply to you.
  1. Carry-on Baggage

    • Delta passengers are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item. Each piece of luggage cannot exceed 45 inches. The Delta check-in counter at the airport has a unit to place your carry-on into that will determine its size allowance. If it meets the size requirements, once on-board the aircraft you can place it in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.

    Acceptable Carry-on Items

    • Laptops count as a carry-on item.

Carry-on baggage includes handbags, briefcases, camera cases, laptop computers, and any other items of similar or smaller size. Certain items will not be counted as carry-on baggage on Delta Airlines and are allowable items. This includes food items for immediate consumption, wheelchairs and crutches, overcoats and umbrellas.

Checked Baggage for North American Flights

    • Flights within the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as of 2010, entail fees per person for the first checked bag. A second checked bag will require a higher fee. Additional supplement charges apply for the first and second bags when checking in via the Delta ticket counter, kiosk or airport curbside. This supplement charge is waivered if you check in at Delta's website on-line

Size and Weight Limitations for Luggage

    • Size and weight matter with checked luggage.

Economy class passengers' luggage must not exceed the maximum of 50 lbs. in weight for each piece. Any poundage over this allotted amount will incur additional fees per pound. The luggage must not exceed 62 linear inches in size. Oversize and additional bags will incur additional charges determined by a Delta agent.

    Checked Baggage for International Flights

    • Implemented fees for all checked baggage on flights in Delta's economy class fluctuate according to destination. For flights destined for Europe, Latin and South America and Asia, the first checked bag is free. A lower charge applies for the second piece when prepaid on-line at Delta's website. A higher fee will apply at the Delta airport ticket counter, kiosk or airport curbside check-in.

Checked Baggage for Business and First Class

    • No matter what destination a first or business class passenger flies on Delta, an allowance of three checked bags can be taken with no added costs. This is not the only perk for flying this category as each bag is allowed 20 lbs. more than the allowance for economy passengers. Although the maximum weight is 70 lbs. for each piece of luggage, the size of each cannot exceed 62 linear inches in size.
