AirTran Airline Baggage Rules

Since the introduction of checked bag fees, passengers are packing more into their carry-ons and bringing more bags on board. AirTran personnel inspect the size of passengers' carry-ons before boarding, so choose carry-on luggage that fits the airline's size requirements. If you are planning to check a bag, you will pay additional fees your bag is over 50 pounds or the sum of the height, weight and length is over 61 inches.
  1. Carry-ons

    • Each passenger is allowed to bring one piece of carry-on luggage and a personal item such as a purse or backpack. Any items you are carrying, including food, reading materials or coats, can be counted as personal items. Assistive devices such as canes, walkers or crutches are exempt. As of 2010, there are no weight restrictions for carry-on baggage.

Due to FCC security restrictions, sharp objects and liquids over 3 ounces are not permitted in carry-on bags, as of 2010. Any knives, scissors with blades longer than four inches or retractable blades should be placed in your checked bag, but you can keep disposable razors or other packaged razor blades in your carry-on.

    Checked Baggage

    • For a nominal fee, passengers can check two bags. Additional bags can be checked at a higher rate. AirTran does not accept checked bags at the gate more than four hours before your flight's listed departure time. For domestic flights, bags must be checked at least 45 minutes before departure, and for international flights, baggage must be presented at the ticket counter at least one hour before departure.

    Size Restrictions

    • Carry-on bags must fit in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you. Any bags or personal items meant to fit under the the seat in front of you should not be longer than 17 inches, wider than 12 inches or taller than 8.5 inches. The overhead bins cannot accommodate bags or personal items larger than 24 inches long, 18 inches wide and 13 inches tall.

Checked bags incur additional fees if the sum of their height, width and length is over 61 inches or if they weight over 50 pounds. Bags with a combined dimension over 80 inches or a weight over 100 pounds are not allowed on board.

    Fees

    • Baggage fees change frequently, so check the terms and conditions on your ticket.

As of August 2010, passengers must pay $20 for their first checked bag and $25 for their second. Any additional checked baggage costs $50 per piece. For bags weighing 51 to 70 pounds or bags measuring 62 to 70 inches the baggage fee is $49, and for bags weighing 71 to 100 pounds or bags measuring 71 to 80 inches the baggage fee is $79. No larger bags are permitted on board.

All fees are waived for active military personnel on their first three bags. Broadcast media personnel are exempt from oversize and overweight fees with valid ID.
