All AirTran passengers may bring on-board one carry-on item and one personal item. Personal items may include handbags, coats, umbrellas, walking sticks, briefcases and laptop computers. Infant food is a carry-on item. Carry-on bags must be able to fit under the seat in front of the passenger or in the overhead storage bin. Garment bags and musical instruments constitute carry-on items as well. Some items for personal assistance will not count toward the carry-on limit. Passengers needing canes, walkers or crutches may carry these items aboard. AirTran provides specific dimensions for carry-on bags and personal items. A carry-on bag cannot exceed 24 inches long, 18 inches wide and 13 inches tall. Personal items must fit under the seat in front of the passenger and cannot exceed 17 inches long, 12 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall. Knives and sharp objects are not allowed in carry-on baggage. AirTran recommends that passengers desiring to check in baggage arrive at the airport 90 minutes prior to departure time. For domestic flights, passengers and their bags will not be accepted for check-in fewer than 45 minutes before departure. For international flights, that time window increases to 60 minutes. However, bags may be checked in no more than four hours before departure time. AirTran also has provisions for Active Military and passengers in wheelchairs. For a passenger with an Active Duty ID, the airline will waive the first, second and third bag fees. Active Duty personnel may also check an oversized bag with no fees. Passengers needing wheelchair assistance may have it checked-in with no fee, or counting towards to the passenger's baggage limit.
A passenger's first checked bag weighing fifty pounds or less will be charged $20. The second checked bag weighing 50 pounds or less will cost the passenger $25 at the ticket counter. AirTran describes excess baggage as anything over the first two bags. Any excess baggage costs $50 apiece. Passengers must also pay fees for overweight bags. Checked baggage weighing between 51 and 70 pounds will cost $49. Bags weighing 71 to 100 pounds will cost the traveler $79.
