As of 2010, Hawaiian Airlines has instituted a fee for each bag you check in. For flights to Hawaii, the fee is $25 for the first checked bag and $35 for an additional bag. There are discounts available if you pre-pay online. For regional travel within Hawaii, the fee is $10 for the first bag and $17 for the second bag.
In addition to fees, there are also restrictions on what you can carry in your checked baggage. The airline will not accept bags that weigh over 70 pounds, and bags that weigh between 50 and 70 pounds are subject to an excess baggage fee of $50.
Hawaiian Airlines allows each passengers one item of carry-on luggage, plus one personal item, as of 2010. If you wish to bring more than this allowance, an excess baggage fee applies. Incidental items such as coats, umbrellas, handbags and cameras are not included in these limits.
Travelers with babies should be aware that lap babies do not have a carry-on allowance, so any baby items are considered part of the adult's carry-on allowance. Strollers and car seats are free to check-in and can also be gate-checked, but they are subject to normal carry-on limits if you wish to keep the item with you.
Every traveler has different needs, but certain rules apply for oversized items, such as surfboards, and potentially dangerous items. The TSA determines the policy for most questionable items based on the potential threat these items pose to the safety of the aircraft. For example, lighters--a common item for smokers--are allowed in carry-on baggage but not in your checked luggage, because the fuel can ignite in the cargo hold and cause a fire.
If your item is cleared by the TSA, make sure Hawaiian Airlines also allows it onboard. Surfboards are considered oversized baggage because they exceed the maximum outside dimensions of 62 inches, so they are allowed onboard but are subject to an excess baggage fee of $50.
