On May 1, 2010, Alaska Airlines instituted a fee for checked baggage on flights operated by Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. The fee is $20 for each checked bag, up to three bags. The fee is $50 per bag for more than three bags. Checked bags cannot weigh more than 50 pounds and cannot be larger than 62 linear feet. To calculate the linear feet, add the height, width and length of the bag. The fees for the first two bags will be waived for military personnel and their dependents on orders. First class passengers may also check two bags free. Mileage Plan MVP and MVP Gold members also get to check two bags free. Passengers traveling within the state of Alaska or to Guadalajara and Mexico City may also check two bags free. Strollers and wheelchairs can be checked for free. Sporting equipment will be accepted as baggage if it is in a bag designed specifically for carrying that item.
Alaska Airlines will accept antlers and horns as checked baggage, but they must be packaged in a hard container, such as a box or crate. Antler tips must be padded and the antlers must be free of raw meat, odor and blood. The maximum size allowed is 38-inches deep by 34-inches wide and 70-inches tall. Fish and raw game meat will be accepted as checked baggage. Fish and meat should be packed to allow 48 hours without refrigeration; they must be packed in a leak-proof container (Styrofoam is not acceptable). Alaska Airlines recommends packing food in gel ice. Dry ice is allowed, but it must be declared at check-in and the container must be labeled and allow an escape for carbon dioxide gas.
Alaska Airlines regulations in 2010 allow passengers to carry one small piece of carry-on luggage and one personal item aboard an aircraft. The carry-on must fit into the overhead storage bin or under the seat in front of you; the bag can be a maximum of 10-inches tall, 17-inches wide and 24-inches long. These measurements include wheels and handles. Passengers wishing to bring a painting, art portfolio, breakable scientific equipment or a fishing pole may bring this item in place of a carry-on bag, even if it exceeds the size limits. The personal item may be a laptop computer, a briefcase or a purse. A pillow and reading material may also be brought on board. The carry-on baggage may not contain any materials prohibited by the airline or by the TSA.
