Alaska Airlines Luggage Rules & Costs

Like all air carriers, Alaska Airlines and its subsidiary, Horizon Air, have strict baggage rules. If passengers are aware of the rules beforehand, they may save fees and avoid delays for improper or unacceptable baggage.
  1. Carry-On Luggage

    • A carry-on bag must be no more than 24-inches by 17-inches by 10-inches, including wheels and handles. Baggage exceeding those dimensions might be sent through as checked-in baggage and charged as such. Beside one carry-on, passengers may bring on one personal item --- briefcase, laptop computer, purse or similar small bag. Under certain conditions, the following can be the one carry-on: artwork portfolios, paintings, delicate science equipment and fishing poles. In addition to their carry-on, passengers can bring personal snacks, outerwear, pillows, infant restraint seats and certain medical equipment.

    Checked Baggage

    • Regular passengers are charged $20 one-way for each of their first three bags, each no more than 50 pounds and less than 62 linear inches (add length plus width plus height.) Additional bags cost $50 each. Mileage Plan and first-class passengers are not charged for their first two bags. Passengers within Alaska and military personnel can take up to three bags free. Additional fees of $50 or $75 may be charged for each overweight or oversize bag. Any bag weighing more than 100 pounds or more than 115 linear inches may not be accepted but may be sent by cargo services instead.

    Prohibited Items

    • Solvents and cleaners are not permitted in airline luggage.

Before packing, passengers should check rules applying on certain items. Alcoholic beverages generally are not banned but are restricted. Flammable, toxic and explosive liquids and solids are prohibited. Banned also are some common items such as paints, self-heating meals (MREs), solvents, and other flammable items. These can produce dangerous conditions during a flight.
