Delta Airlines Checked Baggage Rules

Delta Airlines offers flights to dozens of international and domestic locations. You can take this airline to domestic destinations ranging from Albany, Albuquerque and Anchorage to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Wilmington and Yuma. International options range from Aberdeen and Amsterdam to Zanzibar and Zurich. Delta has specific rules regarding your checked baggage for both international and domestic flights.
  1. Size and Weight

    • With a few exceptions all checked baggage on Delta must weigh no more than 50 lbs. or it will be subject to overweight baggage charges. As of October 2010, these charges are $90 for bags weighing 51 to 70 lbs. and $175 for bags weighing 71 to 100 lbs. on domestic flights or flights to and from Canada.

Overweight baggage charges for flights to or from other countries range from $50 to $450 depending on the destination and the weight of the bag. Additionally, each bag must measure no more than 62 linear inches (height+length+width) or it will be subject to oversize baggage charges ranging from $100 to $300 per bag depending on the destination.

    Domestic Flights

    • Fees for checked bags on domestic Delta flights are $23 for your first bag paid online in advance and $25 for your first bag at the airport, as of October 2010. The second bag will cost $32 online or $35 at the airport.

    International Flights

    • Fees for checked bags on flights to or from Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are the same as domestic fees. You may bring one free checked bag (conforming to weight and size restrictions) on flights to and from Mexico, Aruba, the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Cayman Island. Your second bag on these flights will cost $27 online or $30 at the airport as of October 2010.

You may bring one free checked bag (conforming to weight and size restrictions) on flights to and from Europe. The second bag will cost $50 online or $55 at the airport. You may bring two free checked bags (conforming to weight and size restrictions) on flights to and from Brazil. These bags may weigh up to 70 lbs. each but must still measure no more than 62 linear inches.

Many fees are assessed in the local currency; if you are flying from Europe to the United States, for example, you would pay 50 Euros online or 55 Euros at the airport for your second bag.
